Sources inside the meeting, which included representatives from the Communication Workers Union (CWU) and Unite the Union, say the absence of any top-tier DeepMind leadership was a glaring red flag. “Recognition talks not being attended by senior management at the opening stage is a leading indicator that a company isn’t engaging in good faith. It’s just a time-wasting exercise,” said John Chadfield, a CWU officer present at the session. He added that negotiations have effectively “stalled at an early stage,” with no clear path forward.

The conflict escalated when a DeepMind employee read aloud a letter from colleagues supporting unionization. The letter, reviewed by WIRED, accused Google of deploying classic union-busting tactics: shutting down internal chat channels, blocking staff from responding to company-wide emails about the union bid, and reprimanding workers who tried to circumvent those restrictions. The employee reading the statement was twice interrupted by DeepMind’s own HR representatives, according to multiple attendees. “The intention was to intimidate,” said one DeepMind employee involved in drafting the letter, who spoke on condition of anonymity. “These are well-established union-busting techniques.”

Google DeepMind, for its part, denies any bad faith. Spokesperson Al Verney said the company will “continue to engage constructively in the process and have open dialogue with employees.” He argued that the initial meeting was procedural, focused on defining which workers the unions would represent, and that “the appropriate representatives attended.” However, the union push—first launched in May when workers asked Google to recognize both unions as joint representatives—has already been met with one denial. The company later agreed to third-party arbitration, but Wednesday’s rocky start suggests a long, contentious battle ahead.

The standoff comes amid a broader reckoning in the tech industry over worker organizing, particularly at AI labs where employees are demanding more say in ethical decisions and working conditions. For Google DeepMind, a crown jewel of Alphabet’s AI ambitions, the failure to even begin substantive talks signals a deepening rift between its rank-and-file researchers and a corporate leadership increasingly seen as out of touch. As one union supporter put it: “They treat us like a problem to be handed off to HR, not as partners in shaping the future of AI.”
